The Importance of Escaping The Grind

So this weekend, after a labour-intensive week, I was lucky enough to head off to a cabin on Friday night. Finished work, bag packed and off I went!

No kids, no responsibility, no Wi-Fi. Just firewood, my sandals, my best friend David Miller, my beautiful dog Cuillin, and some really lovely food. Simple, nourishing ingredients. The goal? To kick back and reconnect with the basics.

The Joy of Simplicity

We breathed the fresh air. We ate well. We had each other. And that was enough.
It was a weekend to rest, to play and to recover. No pressure, no plans. Just a chance to slow down and go analogue. And you know? It was gorgeous.
We stayed in a little cabin nestled in nature. We lit a fire under the stars.
There were lazy mornings with fresh coffee in bed. No alarms, no getting up to rush to gym classes, no meetings. Just peace.

A Therapeutic Reset

I can’t tell you how therapeutic it was. It reminded me just how important it is to give ourselves this kind of space.

This was more than just a break - it was a reset. A perfect formula, even, for mental fitness. And if my mind is well, calm, and rested, then surely my physical wellbeing follows. It felt like I was investing in future me.

Creating Space from “Adulting”

What I discovered is that I wasn’t just relaxing, I was protecting a space for myself. A space free from adulting.
No big decisions. No responsibilities.

Just simple choices like:

  • “Is it time for breakfast?”

  • “Shall we have another coffee?”

  • “Which way shall we walk?”

  • “Should I jump in that puddle?”

It was so simple and so lovely, just purposefully allowing ourselves to be free from all of those adult decisions.

The Power of Letting Go

There was something powerful about letting go - not just of tasks, but of responsibility.

Not thinking about mortgage payments, grocery lists, bills or those ever present work deadlines

Just being. Just playing. Just resting.

And wow, I feel so good. Calm. Mentally fit. Ready for the week ahead.

A Message for Leaders and Decision-Makers

I think this message is relevant far beyond me. It’s for our leaders. Our CEOs. Our decision-makers. Our managers and founders who carry the weight of responsibility every day.

Take time to escape.
To be playful.
To wear what you want.
To dye your hair pink if you fancy.
To remember who you are underneath all the roles and responsibilities.

Creating Your Preferred Future Starts Now

Here’s what I’m holding onto: Whatever my desired future is - I need to start living it now.

That means:

  • Changing habits

  • Choosing priorities

  • Setting boundaries

  • Creating time

Time for me.
Time to be who I need to be.

And I truly believe that’s possible for all of us.
It’ll look different for each of us, but the principle is the same:
Step away from tasks, and make space to just be.
